The eyelids play an important role in protecting of the eyeball and spreading the tear film on the ocular surface through blinking. They also play a role in the expressiveness of the look and the face. It is therefore necessary to take care of it!

Rigorous eyelid hygiene is recommended for all (sensitive eyes, lens wearers…) but essential in case of dry eye, chalazion (meibomian cyst), stye or conjunctivitis to avoid any complications.

Dry eye is very commonly related to Meibomian glands obstruction. These glands, which are inside the eyelids, perpendicular to the eyelashes, produce the Meibum.

During normal functioning, the eyes blinking exerts a slight pressure on these glands which allows the release of the Meibum and its spreading on the ocular surface to form what is called the lipid layer of the tear film. This layer prevents the evaporation of tears.

However, when the glands are blocked because of a too thick Meibum, the surface of the eye is deprived of lipid layer and the tears evaporate! This is known as Meibomian dysfunction (blepharitis or meibomitis).

The eyelid hygiene, in addition to eliminating impurities, will allow the Meibomian glands to open.

1 - Hot compresses

Apply warm compresses on your eyes for a few minutes. The heat will help liquefy the meibum that clogs the meibomian glands.

2 - The massage of the eyelids

Massage your eyelids with your fingers, emphasizing the base of the eyelashes, to help get the liquefied fat out of the Meibomian glands. Do not forget the lower eyelids!

3 - The eyelids cleansing

Once out, the liquefied meibum must be removed. A product for eyelid hygiene such as BLEPHACURA or CLEANSING GEL from the Vyséo range is necessary.
