Eyelid hygiene - the first thing to add to your habbits!

The eyelids play an important role as they ensure protection of the eyeball and good distribution of the tear film on the ocular surface thanks to the blinking of the eyes. They also play a role in the expressiveness of the eyes and the face. They absolutely must be taken care of!

Strict eyelid hygiene is recommended for everyone (people with sensitive eyes, contact lens wearers, etc.) but it is essential in case of dry eyes, chalazion, stye or conjunctivitis to avoid any complications.

Dry eye is very commonly linked to obstruction of the meibomian glands. These glands which are located in the eyelids, perpendicular to the eyelashes, produce meibum.

During normal operation, blinking the eyes puts light pressure on these glands which allows meibum to release and spread over the ocular surface to form what is called the tear film lipid layer, which rushes the evaporation of tears. This layer prevents the evaporation of tears.

However, when the glands are blocked with too thick meibum, the surface of the eye is deprived of a lipid layer and tears evaporate! This is called meibomian dysfunction (blepharitis or meibomitis). This is called meibomian dysfunction (blepharitis or meibomitis).

Eyelid hygiene, in addition to removing impurities, will help unclog the meibomian glands.

3 Indispensable steps

1 – hot compress

Apply warm compresses to your eyes for a few minutes. The heat will help to liquefy the meibum (fatty substance) which clogs the meibomian glands.

2 – Eyelid massage

Massage your eyelids with your fingers, concentrating on the base of the eyelashes, to help push the liquefied fat out of the meibomian glands. Don’t forget the lower eyelids!

3 – Cleaning the eyelids

Once taken out, the liquefied fatty substance must be removed. Eyelid hygiene product such as BLEPHACURA or the CLEANSING GEL from the Vyséo line is then necessary to conclude the treatment.
